Lavender Bay

North Sydney Council

Lavender Bay real estate

Lavender Bay is a harbourside suburb three kilometres north of Sydney's central business district, on the lower North Shore, in the North Sydney Council area. It sits on Sydney Harbour, between Milsons Point and McMahons Point.

Gooweebahree and the Cammeraygal

The bay carries two names. It is Lavender Bay, and it is dual-named Gooweebahree, sometimes written Quiberee, in Dharug, the language of the Cammeraygal people, part of the Eora nation. The bay is a natural feature of Port Jackson, also called Sydney Harbour, just west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The suburb of the same name sits on Sydney's lower North Shore, three kilometres north of the central business district, in the North Sydney Council area. The suburb of North Sydney lies to its north, and the area is residential, with broad views out over Sydney Harbour.

George Lavender and the Phoenix

The suburb takes its name from the bay, and the bay was named after George Lavender, the boatswain of the prison hulk Phoenix, moored in the bay for many years. George Lavender lived on 14 acres next to the property of Billy Blue.

Colonists used two other names for the bay as well, Hulk Bay and Phoenix Bay.

It is Lavender Bay, and it is dual-named Gooweebahree, sometimes written Quiberee, in Dharug, the language of the Cammeraygal people, part of the Eora nation.

The railway and the bridge

On 30 May 1915 a railway station opened at Lavender Bay, taking the place of the station at Milsons Point. It lasted only seven weeks: passengers refused to get off there and insisted on trains stopping at Milsons Point.

During the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the North Shore railway line ended at Lavender Bay station. The grounds are used today to stable Sydney Trains rolling stock.

The baths, the wharf and the garden

A wharf in the bay gives access to private vessels. Beside the ferry wharf are the Lavender Bay Baths, a tidal swimming pool built in 1910 and also known as Cavill's Baths, which were once popular with swimmers.

In 1992 a garden was created beside a home, on a railway siding that had become overgrown, in the area from Clark Park to the old railway line. The garden is run by a trust and open to the public. A house in Walker Street is heritage-listed.
